South Dakota Pheasant Numbers Are Up!

The S.D. Game, Fish and Parks Department is out with it's 2007 brood surveys and things are looking good. Pheasant hunters who take the fields in 2007 will be greeted by one of the "largest pheasant populations in South Dakota history" according to officials South Dakota fish and game. A abundance of quality cover and CRP land combine with excellent weather for pheasant brooding in June have combine to create pheasant numbers that surpass the 2005 record by 18% . Insiders are saying that pheasant numbers this year are compariable to the good old days of 1950s and ’60s (The days of the Great Soil Bank)

Only one area in extreme Western SD showed a slight decrease in pheasant numbers but even in this area the PPM (Pheasants Per Mile) index was close to its 10-year average.

The Iowa DNR Reports 2007 Pheasant Numbers Steady from 2006

The pheasants of iowa survived a March, blizzard, an ice storm and flooding during the important spring nesting season. It is not the type of scenario that Iowa pheasant hunters dream about but despite mother nature Iowa will maintain its position as a top pheasant hunting state in the country. According to the 2007 August Upland Wildlife Roadside Survey, the pheasant populations across Iowa are nearly unchanged compared to 2006.
