I have 2 English Springers that have seeds and chunks of weeds in their eyes after hunting.  Do any of you have this problem?  What do you do to clear them?

I have a GSP and I have this problem too. After hunting I just do an eye check and take a clean q-tip and wipe the gunk out. If there is a lot of gunk or we have hunted a lot I put a couple of drops of sterile saline to help flush anything I might have missed. You should be able to go to your local feed store and get antibiotic eye ointment for the really bad days. Where we have been hunting they plant mullet seed and it is awful. I have looked for an eye flush on some of the hunting supply web sites but have been unsuccessful. Good luck to you!

    Michael,
My GSPs had this problem a few weeks ago hunting in Sorghum. Here's what I wound up doing -- you might need to go to your vet if the eyes are not better to make sure they didn't get any seeds under the 3rd eyelid or any scratches on the eyes. They will give you eye drops and check the eyes -- I keep antibiotics in my tack box for treatment if the redness and "gunk" does not go away.

Keep saline solution (Walgreens/CVS carries it with the applicator) on hand and rinse the eyes out well after hunting. check their eyes during lunch/break time, if need be. You can put vaseline on the eyelids and it acts as an ointment to help the eyelids against being "beaten on" while the dog is running, and I've found less sorghum/seeds gets stuck on the eyelids when running.

    Good luck and happy hunting,
    Jessica
