With so many hunters leaving the field and hanging up their boots I just wanted to remined everyone how important it is to get kids off the couch and out into the field. Tell us what your doing to get kids involved in hunting! |

I've been teaching hunter education for 12 years now. That's me in the orange vest.

In the past I was a counsulor for the BSA in archery and rifle.
For the past 6 years I have been using birds from my game farm to mentor youngsters on pheasant hunting.

Wow Old Dog. THANK YOU! A lot of people talk the talk but your doing it. Are you seeing a lot of kids coming through hunters saftey because their dad or relatives hunt or are there some kids that just want to get into hunting and have no mentor? |

You're welcome. It's a little easier for me , because I only have one child and no grandchildren.
The kids that come through the program all have a parent or guardian, usually grandpa, that is encouraging them. In most cases their aim is big game hunting, because there isn't much pheasant hunting in my area of Washington. When I find the right student with an interest in upland game I try to encourage that by offering to mentor for a nomnal fee to cover the cost of the birds.
Washington requires first time hunters born after Jan. 1 1972 to have a hunter education certificate in order to purchase a hunting license. So I'm seeing quite a few 20 and 30 something students. Some of them are needing mentors, but they usually want help with big game, and I don't do much of that. |

I went through hunters safety (again) with my son last year. It was a great experience that I will share with my daughter in a couple of years. I was able to get my son out to a game farm last fall to get his first bird. He is now hooked. I've got a new hunting partner for the fall and I'm stoked for the future.
Now if I can just learn to shoot better than the bugger.

"Now if I can just learn to shoot better than the bugger"

I've heard that one too. If my son gets a little too much attitude though I just threaten not to buy him lunch. That usually brings him back down a Earth.

Glade to see I'm not the only one taking kids. I got so many now I don't get to take a gun but it is well worth it. Keep up the good work and hopefully they'll be taking us hunting later in life. |

That is really nice stuff. Kids and dogs for some reason if you got the 2 together it'll make the whole hunt better. |

Alright, alright, none of this behind the back note passing stuff. We're past grade school boys. If you don't have something nice to say, don't say it at all.....Grouchy, I'll send you a note later!

I prefer to be called Rubenesque, not fat! You might have to look in a dictiaonary to figure that one out, I know I had to when someone told it to me. |

Grouchy, those picutes rock!! Great stuff and keep up the great work. For what it's worth, my wife tells me I act like a kid. Would that get me into your hunting group? |
