    Tarheel Blue threw out this question to me and I though it was a good one, although I must admit I don't know the answer to the question.  Check back in a few days and I'm sure some of you that are smarter then me will have the correct answer.

    I'm guessing that we're talking about some form of shotgun type too, correct? If we are talking about a rifled barrel then I want to change my answer. BD, is this date on the rifle from the Chinese invention?

    The Chinese invented gunpowder in 1232. Man, did they start something! The first recorded use of a firearm was in 1364. Did you know that shotguns were not invented until 1850?

    I was only looking at the two items in question, and I believe the first rifling was from Germany. From what I've read, some Arabs learned of this "powder" from the Chinese and were able to harness this energy at an early date as well.

    So...let me get this staight.  The Chinese invented gunpowder in 1232 but the gun wasn't invented for another 130 some years.  How did they know to call it "gun"powder???

    That history stuff always confused me.

    Think of the  _ _ lls it took to pour explosive powder down a metal tube, then stuff a round pellet down on top of it, and then close your eyes, strike that kitchen match and light that wick. Proof that we had rednecks amongst us before we knew what it meant. 

    I'd love to have seen the expression on that dude's face the first time that explosion/projectile went off down the barrel!! I can just imagine him (or her!) saying..."Hey Ya'll, you ain't gonna believe this s- - -!!!" I bet there were plenty of singed eyebrows!!!!
