Has anyone had any luck with the deer this last season.  I saw quite a few but didn't fire a shot or arrow.  I drew on one but he busted me.  One step away from being in my freezer.  The big ones seem to have a knack for that.

Jon,  I had no luck this year either.  I usually hunt at my brother's place in Colorado.  This year I decided to stay in MA.  I tried a new area close to home.  When I scouted the area I came across a perfect spot.  Alas, there were two stands already set up in anticipation of opening day.  I did find a decent spot in the end.  On opening day I headed in before light.  I jumped a deer within twenty yards of my spot.  After kicking myself, I set up in my spot and sat.  By 9:00 A.M.,... well if I had a dime for every hunter that busted by me within fifty yards without seeing me, Il'd be a rich man.  I headed home.  I have a antlered deer tag for Colorado this fall.  No crowds there and we usually have success.

I had some luck this year, but not the type that I would have liked. I hunt in southern Wisconsin for bow and early gun season then head way up north in Wisconsin for the last 4 or 5 days of gun season. Shot two doe with the bow early in the season to get my freezer filled and get my buck permit (It was earn-a-buck this year in most of WI.) I saw a few nice bucks but were well out of shooting range. Then for gun season I saw about 15-20 doe. Not a single one big enough to shoot or a single buck was among any of them. Kind of a dissappointing yr.

Where in Colorado does your brother live NE HUNTER? I have family out in Washington County.

amanogue, Two of my brothers live in CO, both in Boulder County. One lives on the flat lands outside Boulder, the other lives up near Estes Park at about 8500 ft. It is up there we hunt. I am going out this fall, second season combined rifle. My younger brother and I will be hunting up at my older brothers house but it will be strange for us. My older brother won't be there this year. He is in Iraq now through next summer. I told him he is old as dirt and should not be going off to war but he wants to do his part. He is a sergeant, a combat medic.

Hillbilly. How does it work in oregon? Can you get tags over the counter or is it a lottery system ?

Up here in MA licenses are bought over the counter or online. You get two buck tags with the license. Does are by lottery but real easy to get.

Capped a doe on the last day of the season with 00 buckshot, from 40 yards. Hit her with my first shot, she took off running, I racked another shell into my pump gun (Benelli Nova) and made a running shot. She went into a slow-motion somersault and fell dead in her tracks, facing back the way from where she had come from.

Broke a rib, trying to load her into the back of my truck without any help.

Wow Tarheel, it sounds like a exciting and painful end to the season. I've really never understood the whole buckshot thing. What's the advantage of that over a slug? I don't think it's even legal here in WI.
