The Golden Retriever is a very intelligent, diligent, happy, and most of all, loyal dog. This dog is used for many different things. He is used as a tracking dog, a retriever and hunting dog, a drug, gun, and explosive-sniffing dog, a search and rescue dog, and a companion/ therapy dog. He loves the water and will tirelessly retrieve for that avid hunter.
The Golden breed was developed in the 19th century with the help of Lord Tweedmouth in Scotland. A combination of the smaller Newfoundland, the Tweed Water Spaniel, and the Irish Setter, were bred and interbred with more Water Spaniels to produce the first pure Golden Retriever, "Nous", which Lord Tweedmouth bought in 1865. He bred Nous to yet another Tweed Water Spaniel and further developed the breed. In 1925 The American Kennel Club registered its first Golden Retriever, and the breed has developed rapidly to the popular dog it is today.
