North River Retreat is a real treat. John Gavin is a friendly and capable host. The Retreat is really a retreat. I have been a guest on several occasions and had a wonderful time. My wife has joined me for sporting clays, her first every and because of the friendly environment, no stress she is now a real fan. She is a vegetarian so she won’t be hunting but really enjoys the shooting competition.

John makes the whole experience a fun and relaxed experience, while still creating a challenging time. I would recommend this to anyone who truly enjoys the outdoors and the true essence of nature.

Phil, Steve, James and I did two Sporting Clay Clinics at North River Retreat in 2008. We used John Gavitts’ Over and Under Shotguns and our own. He has a level 5 instructor, John Alexander as a guest instructor do the instruction on a $25.000.00 automated range with multiple stations projectile options. John has you shooting pieces off of the clays you hit by the end of the day. The shooting is great fun, competitive and guaranteed to improve anyone’s game by the end of the session. Then you have a great lunch on any side of your half day session with great food, friendly bird dogs and great beverage as appropriate. Good value and we keep going back for refreshers even though we shoot at local resorts. We all plan to show up this Fall for our warm up towing shooting.

The sporting clay range at North River retreat is a special place for anyone interested in shooting. John Gavitt has a fantastic Sporting Clay range set up that is challenging, yet allows all shooters to be successful on the range. John’s commitment to ensuring each person has a great time is second to none and his ability to instruct is always spot on. This past spring John hosted a group of 11 Venture Scouts to North River, each Scout had a blast shooting clay’s and they are still talking about the trip. The setting of the clay range is tucked away in the rolling hills of the West Virginia countryside, a great place to relax and have fun. My two boys and I have enjoyed the amenities at North River Retreat for two seasons. I highly recommend calling John at North River retreat to plan your next outdoor event!

This is a wonderful place to take both kids and bird dogs who are learning the game. The birds hold well and afford the kids good shots in a controlled and safe environment. Similarly, young dogs can be staunched on point and then can be worked effectively on learning to retrieve to hand.

The five stand sporting clays range offers an excellent range of targets to challenge beginning and intermediate shotgunners as they
learn safe gun handling and develop their skills. Excellent
instruction and coaching is available through the periodic services of John Alexander, an NSCA Level III instructor.

I visited North River Retreat twice last year for guided quail shoots. What a great experience both times! John Gavin is a wonderful host and someone who goes out of his way to provide a memorable experience. The property is an excellent mixture of cover types and he has done an outstanding job of mixing the coveys throughout the different covers. The birds were strong flyers, providing excellent shooting. We took my own pointer to work on birds but on the second hunt we also teamed up with Johns dog for some great dog work. Lunch both times, as prepared by John, was memorable. I can recommend North River without reservation and plan to return there again this coming year. George Gardner/Washington, Virginia

John Gavitt directs a great quail hunt. I have visited North River three times and always found good dog work and plenty of shooting. John works hard to flush the pointed birds toward the best shooting area. The birds dont always cooperate making for some difficult shots. Lunch is great also. Bring lots of shells for a good shoot.
