Congratulations to all the kids who participated in the Hunt Safe course in Miller this year. I would like to express appreciation to Dale Simons for teaching the course and to the Wall Lake Hunting Club for assisting with the live fire and supplying all the materials. With the help of all the volunteers, the Hunt Safe course turned out to be a big success Congratulations to Dale Simons, who was picked as the 2003 Region 2 Hunt Safe instructor of the year. Congratulations to Grant Lockner of Ree Heights, who won the youth model 20 gauge shotgun.
The pheasant hunts for the kids who participated in the Hunt Safe course were held September 11 at Kenny Werdel's preserve and September 12 at Clint Smith's preserve. The Wall Lake Hunting Club supplied shells, pop and food for the hunt. The kids started off by taking some target practice on clay birds before the actual hunt. The youth hunt is an excellent way to get kids interested and involved in the sport of hunting.
The youth pheasant hunting season is October 2 and 3. Youth hunters can hunt both public and private land except for public road rights-of-way. Shooting hours are from 12 noon to sunset and the daily limit is three cock pheasants. Youth hunters must be 12 years old, or turn 12 before January 1, through 15 years old and possess a valid small game license. Remember, all youth hunters must be accompanied by an unarmed adult.
The resident-only pheasant season is October 9-11 and only public lands are open during that season. The shooting hours are from noon to sunset each day with a daily bag limit of three cock pheasants. The regular pheasant season opens October 16 and runs through January 2, 2005. Shooting hours for the regular season are 12 noon to sunset October 16-30, and 10 a.m. to sunset the rest of the season.
