Nearly 200,000 pheasants were harvested by about 45,000 hunters last year in Wisconsin.

This year, as the season prepares to open, the numbers are expected to be similar.

We won’t know the totals until next year, but there appears to be a similar number of hunters heading out this year. The bird population should also be similar to last year. It was a rough winter on the birds in 2010 leading to a little bit of a struggle last year with hunting.

This past year the winter was mild and the spring was great for pheasants and other upland game. While the spring was good for hatching the summer did pose some issues. Drought covered most of the state and that led to a decrease in the habitat for the birds.

Crops are already being harvest across the state. It’s been an interesting harvest season in Wisconsin and the upland bird report is still remaining optimistically cautious. Experts in the state want to say that this year will be better than last and it should be, but everybody is kind of waiting to see what happens.

This year’s pheasant season opens on October 20th and runs through the end of December. So far the weather in the state has been pretty typical of what usually happens in October. The temperatures have been above normal reaching all the way into the 70s early in the month, but the temps have also dipped down into the low 20s at times.

Bird hunters typically look for a little colder weather so it can be comfortable for them and their hunting dogs to make travel across fields and more difficult terrain without getting too overheated.

The pheasant season is here and there should be birds out there for hunters. If you’re heading out this season for a Wisconsin pheasant hunt you should have some luck. Be sure to report back on what you’re seeing out there compared to seasons in the past.
