A few upland bird seasons open in just a couple days in California.
Just a weeks ago there was a youth hunt for quail and chukar partridge. The reports coming out of the state are that the birds were hard to come by during the youth hunt.
Similar reports are starting to trickle out of California. The upland season there this year seems to be shaping up to be more difficult than initially thought. The young birds are not making it through like originally thought and the holdover birds are struggling as well.
It looks like a c
hallenge lies ahead for hunters in the state.
The pheasant season is due to open in about four weeks. We’ll have to see how things go with the other upland seasons heading in pheasant season. The early reports from this summer were generally positive heading into the season, but as the days tick on closer to the season it looks like it could be challenging for
pheasant hunters in California this year.
The upland seasons are starting to open all across the country. The outlook has been mixed. There were pretty good spring hatching conditions earlier this year, but droughts took over much of the country throughout the summer making it difficult on the birds and other game.
In California the climate is so diverse that things will likely be localized, but these early reports are shading on the side of negative. You should be able to find birds out there in the field, but you’ll struggle a little more than last year and in previous years.
Hopefully you have a good piece of land for yourself.
Report back if you have good luck. It’s always interesting to see how things are going in specific parts of the country and it will be interesting to see how things are going in California this year after these initial reports.
