For many hunters it’s not so much about the hunt as it is about getting together with family and friends.

That is exactly how a group of pheasant hunters looks at. The group, mostly from the Colorado area, have been visiting P&R Hunting in Dallas, South Dakota for the last 30 years and there appears to be signs of stopping now.

The group includes some of the original hunters that started way back in 1983. They first heard about the opportunity to hunt and things kind of took off from there. The group has 15 hunters going to opening day this season and in the past the number has ranged up and down.

We’re not talking about just going back each year to the same place. This group of hunters has not even missed an opening day in the last 30 years.

There is something about hunting that brings about tradition. There is something special about having a reason to get together with family and friends to just spend some time together. The hunting is secondary although nobody is complaining when the birds are plentiful.

It’s great to read about traditions like this. There is so much more to hunting than the actual harvest. When people head out to pheasant hunt in South Dakota or any other kind of hunt they are getting out in nature and in most cases spending time with their loved ones.

Hunting is about passing on knowledge and experience and creating memories that make life worth living.

If you’re heading out this year with your usual group of hunters be sure to sit back and take it all in. Maybe you’ll hit 30 years or maybe you’re already well beyond that. You never know when things might start to fade away so be sure to appreciate it while you can.

This group from Colorado proves that with a little dedication and a common love for pheasant hunting that traditionals can last for generations.
