It was reported that the pheasant hunting season should be a good on in Iowa. The weather cooperated throughout the opening days of the season, but so far the reports have been mixed.

Some hunters are reporting good success while seeing plenty of birds. Others are saying that the season so far has been good, but nothing special that would stand out above previous seasons.

As is the case with everything it can come down to expectations. The weather was cold and crisp throughout opening weekend making it really comfortable to be out in the field. Hunters probably read the reports of good bird populations and figured the weather would make it a field day for the pheasants.

When you have high expectations it can lead to some letdown even if things are pretty good.

Last year the hunting numbers were down throughout the country. Those hunters that made it through last season when the birds were not there and the conditions were tough probably looked at this season as a great success so far.

In fact, that’s just what some hunters were saying. A common theme was that hunters were doing better than last year, but not as good or even close to as good as 10 years ago when pheasants were really peaking in the state and in the country.

Some are looking at the increase in farmland and are realizing that the habitat for the birds is diminishing a bit. When the farmers are enticed to grow corn it takes away from the tall cover grass for the pheasants. It’s a natural evolution of farming and it just happens to take things away from the hunters that love to pursue the prettiest bird in the wild.

We’ll continue to keep an eye on pheasant hunting in Iowa and other states, but so far things have been mostly positive so it’s a good year to head out and enjoy the pheasant hunting no matter where you are.
