It’s never good to read about hunting accidents, but that’s just what happened recently.

Former Milwaukee Brewer Robin Yount was on a hunting trip and accidentally shot his fellow hunter in the back and ear.

Thankfully the person shot is okay. Current Chicago Cubs coach Dale Sveum shook off the incident saying that it is not as big of a deal as some have made it out to be.

The two are good friends and have been hunting for years. For what it’s worth Sveum did say that Yount go the bird and the entire party was able to joke about it later.

Whenever something like this happens it makes you think of how you can avoid issues in the future. Obviously these are seasoned hunters that have been out before. It was interesting to see that Sveum said he and Yount have shot close to each other in the past. he said it was never really that close, but they have fired close in the past.

It’s one of the natures of upland bird hunting. You can’t always control where the birds will fly and sometimes you can lose focus on where your fellow hunters are when you’re in the field. You’re so focused on getting the bird that you simply lose sight.

The best thing we all can do is look at incidents like this and try to learn from them. We’ve all likely had close calls in the past and nobody’s perfect. When you’re out in the field be safe as you can and  be as aware as you can at all times.

A nice pheasant or a nice quail would be great to harvest, but it’s  not worth hurting someone else in the hunting party. At best you’ll get some friendly hassling from your fellow hunters and at worst you’ll get someone seriously injured.
