The Land And Water Conservation Fund is a federal program implemented by Congress in 1964. The original duration of the fund was set to be 25 years, but was renewed to extend the benefits of the program for many more years.

But the time has come when the fund could come to an end. The current timeline is 2015, which is coming fast as timelines always do.

Now, a few members of Congress are suggestion that the fund should come to an end. It would end one of the longest running funds in the history of the US. The ending of the fund would also end something that has benefited communities throughout the US including communities in South Dakota.

Some federal, state and local land in South Dakota has benefited from the fund for years. Funds have been used to improve the habitat in the state making it a better place for people to enjoy the outdoors with activities such as fishing and hunting.

But it’s not just fishing and hunting that have benefitted. The funds have been used to make land and water more natural and appealing to all wildlife. With all the push for more commerce expansion throughout the US it’s becoming more difficult to keep some of the habitat as it’s always been.

Pheasant hunting is one of the biggest contributors to South Dakota’s economy each year. There are a number of threats to the population right now as we’ve mentioned here on the website.

Adding one more to the list would add to the mounting pressure on the pheasant population. It could also contribute to the decrease in the pheasant population that’s been happening the last couple years.

Many states are calling for Congress to renew the Land and Water Conservation Fund. It’s a good program for the US that has been effective for nearly a half century.

Continuing the fund is good for America’s wildlife and rich outdoor heritage.
