After hunting for so long, sometimes you can forget that you were once a beginner. At one time you too had to take the classes and pass all the tests. You had to buy your first gun and get all the right attire. Then your dad or brother or uncle had to show you the ropes, all the little things that aren’t taught in the classes.

Sometimes it’s easy to forget how intimidating it may be to compete with other hunters that first time out, which is why the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife made a point to provide young hunters an opportunity to gain some experience.

During September they will hold pheasant hunts around the state at 12 different sites for kids ages 17 and younger.

The hunts are meant to reward all the kids for committing the time and successfully finishing their hunter education. It also helps to take the pressure off them when October rolls around and the season really gets going. They can get into the fields and have fun without having to worry about the more experienced hunters.

For beginners, it’s the perfect place to practice, especially with parents or an adult friend (21 years or older) to supervise. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife stocks pheasants at each event.

The Department also encourages people with bird dogs to attend to get some pre-season training. Volunteers can accompany the youngsters in the field.

The event is completely free. The only stipulation is that youth hunters will need a valid hunting license. Hunters that are older than 14 will also need an Upland Game Bird Validation.

Some youth events will even begin with a shotgun skills clinic!
