The 2013 pheasant season had a negative vibe.

States like Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado and others have all reported down seasons.

The number of pheasants in the field and hunters in the field both seem to be down. The drought from the past year has taken a toll and it’s been one of the causes of a poor season.

But it’s not all negative news this season.

Some places in South Dakota reported success.

One report comes out of South Dakota Ringnecks. Hunters from different states came together again to take on the birds. The entire operation spans some 2,000 acres, but this hunt centered on a specialized area that was about 400 acres.

Say what you want about private pheasant hunting, but these folks maintain the habitat necessary to hold pheasants. There are thick patches of cover along with ample food. The birds have everything they need to thrive in a state where much of the land is being used for other agricultural purposes.

The party included 10 guys including a filming crew for an outdoor show. The crew made it out for an afternoon hunt the first day. After some work, every hunter was able to bag the limit. There was some difficult conditions when sleet hit, but that didn’t stop the hunters.

It sounds like things were first class the entire time with the hunt. The hunters had great dogs helping them and were able to succeed even with the sleet and some rather extreme wind. The birds were quick to get up in the air, but the hunters were crack shots and only allowed a few to fly away to see another day.

So there is some good news out there for pheasant hunters this year.

Hopefully you had some good success wherever you are.
