Pheasant count indicates another strong season

All indications point to another promising pheasant hunt in Illinois when the season opens next month.

The May call counts were 11 percent higher than the previous year and 32 percent over the five-year average. And, the August brood counts were 5 percent above 2003.

"It looks like the number of pheasants will be up a little bit over last year," said John Cole of the state Department of Natural Resources.

Last year 50,992 hunters harvested 181,976 pheasants, which was a 28 percent increase compared with the previous season and 14 percent over the five-year average.

"We should add 10 to 12 percent this year, up around 200,000. If we do, it will be the first time since 1997 that it's been that high," Cole said.

Illinois hasn't recorded back-to-back years with harvest increases in the past decade.

Cole credits the increased population to three straight mild winters and an upswing in Conservation Reserve Program acreage.
