Finding food is not the primary objective for the majority of upland bird hunters a small survey for Wingshooting USA TV has found.

Even though a more general survey had previously identified that hunters go hunting for a source of food in a gloomy economy – the Scott Linden’s 4th annual ‘Upland Nation Index’ has found the reasons may be very different.

With 1 in 3 of Linden’s fans owning two or more dogs it should be no surprise that the most common reason was to watch their dogs work. A startling revelation also showed that while some may consider two dogs a big enough family – 28% of the survey respondents were planning to buy another dog soon.

The second most given reason was to spend time with loved ones and the third most popular answer was to be in natural surroundings.

Bringing home food surprisingly came last in the survey.

When away from the hunting grounds, it seems that fans of Wingshooting USA TV are still sharpening their skills and those of their dogs, with nearly half stating their main activity was either training their dog or clay target shooting.

South Dakota is a popular hunting ground for many of Linden’s fans with 25% of the survey respondents saying they take out of state trips to the area for hunting. Public and private land are close runners when it comes to the most popular land hunters like to spend time on, with 45% and 42% respectively.

Another popular state was Kansas with 17% of the vote.

Some of these results should not be a surprise. The training of dogs for hunting purposes is a key part of the hunting experience and South Dakota has long been a popular pheasant hunting state.

The survey is taken by 1,700 viewers of the Wingshooting USA television program and the margin for error is estimated at 5%.

Do you agree with the survey results? What would your responses be?
