After their very successful banquet and auction last year, the Southern Hills Pheasants Forever is set to host an event again.

Last year was the first time the event was held, and it raised $5,000. This money was spent on improving the pheasant habitat in the local Southern Black Hills. This included $1,000 spent on planting trees and other foliage and $3,000 on an irrigation system for the Westside of Angostura.

The money raised at this year’s event has already been earmarked again for improving areas of pheasant habitats. This is aligned with the main goal for national elements of Pheasants Forever. The event is being themed as “It’s all about the birds”.

According to the national organization's website, Pheasants Forever is a unique group as the responsibility of how locally raised funds are spent is devolved to the local groups.

The first Pheasants Forever chapter was formed in 1983 in Minnesota. Today there are more than 600 chapters across the United States and Canada, with 125,000 current members.

South Dakota is a particular hotbed, not surprisingly because it forms part of the Pheasant country, where there are 33 chapters and 5,700 members.

The Southern Hills Banquet attendees, who will carry on supporting the local bird population with their fundraising efforts, will be treated to a meal choice of a prime rib or baked chicken. There will also be games, raffles and auctions.

More than $15,000 in guns and other prizes has already been donated to the event to be given away. The night will also include a ladies only and youth raffle.

The youth aspect is pretty important and it will be one of the focuses for this year’s event in addition to wild pheasant habitat. This is because there is an aging membership population which is also currently dwindling in numbers. Therefore it is hoped events like this can encourage the next generation to support the sport and group.

The night’s ticket for the event also includes a one year membership to Pheasants Forever.

Are you a member of pheasants forever? Did you attend this event last year?
