Pheasant Pies Make Dough for Conservation; Big Al's Gourmet Pies and Simek's Quality Foods Partner with Pheasants Forever

ST. PAUL, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 15, 2004--Pheasants Forever (PF), Big Al's, and Simek's have announced a partnership that will benefit PF's conservation mission. PF has licensed its logo to Big Al's for use on their wild game products that include pheasant pies, pheasant chili, wild berry dessert pies, and various other wild game products. Simek's is the new distributor of all Big Al's products to grocery and convenience stores. Through the partnership and their "Pie-O-Neering for Habitat" concept, Big Al's and Simek's will make a contribution to Pheasants Forever and PF's "Build a Wildlife Area" program for each product sold.

Big Al's products will be available in grocery and convenience stores under the Simek's label later this summer. You will find the Big Al's / Simek's product line within you grocer's frozen meat department. Look for these gourmet products by the "Pie-O-Neering for Habitat" signs. The Simek's fundraising division will also be offering this product line to PF chapters and other non-profit fundraising organizations to sell within their communities.

"This is a ground-breaking partnership for conservation," reported Joe Duggan, PF's vice president of corporate relations and marketing. "Through this partnership, families can put great tasting food on the table and help the environment at the same time. And, through our Build a Wildlife Area campaigns, these products will lead to more wildlife areas, which will be open for public hunting and recreation." The Build a Wildlife Area program began in Minnesota in 2003. Through the program, PF raises money to purchase land, which they turn over to a state natural resources agency to be managed as a public Wildlife Management Area (WMA). These WMAs are open for public recreation; including, bird watching, hiking, and hunting.

Pheasant Pies are Big Al's signature item. Made with hearty pheasant chunks, the pheasant pies are a giant gourmet version of your favorite chicken or turkey pot pie. These 37-ounce delicacies include peas, carrots, potatoes, and onion. It's all held together with a flavorful gravy and flaky crust. Each pheasant pie feeds about four to six people.

"We have built a very successful business in selling our pheasant pies to game farms and hunt clubs," explains Al Foltman, also known as 'Big Al.' "The partnership with Simek's brings our great tasting products to the general public, while our relationship with Pheasants Forever allows us to be stewards of the land at the same time. I am a big believer in the conservation work of Pheasants Forever and am thrilled to be a part of those efforts."

"This partnership made too much sense for Simek's not to join," added Scott Olson, Simek's vice president. "Through Big Al's, we have a tremendous new product to offer. And through Pheasants Forever, we can join a great cause. Look for the Simek's logo in your grocery store's frozen meat department and know that you are doing something good for wildlife habitat. That's a very unique and wonderful benefit we believe our valued customers will appreciate."

"Pie-O-Neering for Habitat" will kick off at Minnesota's Game Fair this August 6th. Game Fair is an outdoor hunting and fishing expo attended by over 50,000 people over the first two weekends in August. A portion of each pie sold at Game Fair will go directly to Minnesota's Build a Wildlife Area campaign. Last year's campaign successfully purchased 318 acres in Morrison County, Minn. now open to the public.

Pheasants Forever is a non-profit conservation organization dedicated to the protection and enhancement of pheasant and other wildlife populations in North America through habitat improvement, land management, public awareness, and education. Such efforts benefit landowners and wildlife alike. Pheasants Forever has 108,000 members in over 600 local chapters across the continent.
