Big Year for Pheasants Forever in Michigan Continues with DNR Award

Pheasants Forever receives Partnership in Conservation award from Michigan DNR

St. Paul, Minn. – August 12, 2005 – Earlier this week, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Michigan Natural Resources Commission recognized Pheasants Forever (PF) with an award for outstanding Partnership in Conservation. The award was recently re-activated by DNR Director Rebecca Humphries. The award honors individuals, organizations, and government officials who assist the DNR through volunteer work in the areas of conservation and natural resources management. Award nominations are submitted by DNR employees.

PF was recognized as a strong partner with the DNR in the enhancement, restoration, and conservation of Michigan’s wildlife resources and grassland habitats. PF has 40 chapters in Michigan with nearly 10,000 members statewide. Nationally, PF has 600 chapters and 110,000 members. Since the organization’s inception in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1982, PF has worked on over 300,000 habitat projects benefiting over 3.4 million acres for wildlife across the country. Nearly 50,000 of those projects have occurred in the Great Lake’s state to the benefit of over 315,000 acres. PF is also active in developing wildlife-friendly practices in state and federal Farm Bill programs.

“Pheasants Forever has been a great partner to the DNR in time, energy, and dollars,” said Humphries. “They consistently stand with us in matters of wildlife habitat management and conservation, helping to provide access to tremendous hunting opportunities.”

PF was nominated for the award by an employee in the DNR’s Wildlife Division. Accepting the award for the organization were PF State Council President Steven Schneider and PF Wildlife Biologist Mike Parker.

“This has been a huge year for Pheasants Forever in Michigan,” explained Parker. “This year, we went to work on completing the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program through a grant with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality; our new national chairman of the board, Charlie McLravy, is from Lansing; and today we add this recognition from the Commission and the DNR to that list. But most importantly, our chapter projects are creating wildlife habitat on the ground and that is the true testament of PF. This award recognizes every PF member and their dedication to conservation volunteerism.”

PF is a national non-profit conservation organization dedicated to the protection and enhancement of pheasant and other wildlife populations in North America through habitat improvement, land management, public awareness, and education. Such efforts benefit landowners and wildlife alike. PF is the only national wildlife conservation organization that leaves 100 percent of the fundraising dollars, along with the decision on how best to utilize those funds, in the local communities where they are raised.
