The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has extended the state's pheasant season until Dec. 31 - two weeks longer than the previous end date.

Ed Boggess, policy chief for the DNR's Fish and Wildlife Division, said the longer season will provide hunting opportunities over the holidays without harming pheasant populations.

"While we recognize that some hunters did not favor this extension out of a concern for pheasants, the biology of pheasant populations supports this change," Boggess said.

The DNR has emergency power to close or reduce seasons if necessary.

Pheasant hunters requested the longer season, and DNR biologists and the hunters group Pheasants Forever supported the request.

More than 100,000 people hunt pheasants in Minnesota. This years season will begin Oct. 16. A small game license and a $7.50 habitat stamp are required.
