Property owners keep hunting rights with annexation

Robert Cunningham

After several months of waiting, Robert and Judy Schow can finally call Pleasant Grove "home."

On Sept. 21, the City Council unanimously approved an ordinance that would allow Schow and a handful of neighbors to annex their combined 32 acres of county property into PleasantGrove.

The area will be zoned A1, which gives full animal rights. "My wife works for the city, we receive services from the city, and we'd really like to live in the city," Schow said at an August 17 meeting.

The annexation includes a provision that allows firearms to be discharged on the Schows' and Scott Hanks' properties, within the city limits.

"We are rural people hanging on to a few last strings as development occurs," Hanks said.

The Hanks will be able to keep their traditional family turkey shoot and the Schows can continue to hunt birds and kill varmints until progress requires the rezoning of the land or such development encroaches within limits set by the Division of Wildlife Resources.

The DWR does not allow the discharge of firearms within 500 ft. of a residential structure. West Fields residents were granted similar rights to continue hunting on their private properties when the neighborhood annexed into Pleasant Grove.

This story appeared in the North County Newspapers on page 1.
