After Iowa corn harvest, pheasant season should pick up

There is a silver lining to this year's very slow start to Iowa's hunting season. When farmers finally harvest remaining standing corn, pheasants will be forced into grassy cover.
And because they weren't hunted hard for the first few weeks of the season, there should be more birds than usual later in the year.

Before making a trip to Iowa, though, you'd be wise to monitor the ongoing harvest. A good source on the Internet is:

Another good idea for anyone heading to the Hawkeye State is to purchase the Iowa Sportsman's Atlas, a comprehensive map of public hunting areas in all 99 counties. The guide is available for $19.95 by calling 1-800-568-8334.

Out-of-state hunting licenses in Iowa cost $80.50 plus an $8.50 habitat fee and are good through Jan. 10.
