The Pere Marquette Youth Pheasant Hunt has been scheduled for March 7, 2015 and young pheasant hunters between the ages of 10 and 15 can now apply for a place.
The early spring addition to the Illinois Youth Pheasant Hunt Program is very popular and demand for places is usually very high. It is also highly unusual for an event to be held this time of the year. Most youth hunting opportunities are offered during the fall or early winter.
The day is modelled after another popular youth hunting experience: the World Shooting and Recreational Complex Youth Pheasant Hunt. A morning wingshooting clinic managed by National Sporting Clays Association certified instructors will greet those who attend.
The clinic will allow young hunters to practice their safe shotgun handling and operation skills. During the afternoon, the attendees will be taken into the field to participate in a real pheasant hunt.
The event could not proceed with the support of more than a dozen sponsors who have generously donated funds for clay targets, field shotshells and lunch. Through members and associations, the sponsors also provide access to bird dogs and their handlers as well as hunting guides.
Those who are interested in attending the event will need to request a permit. Permits for the Pere Marquette Youth Pheasant Hunt can be obtained on the IDNR’s Controlled Pheasant Hunting Internet Reservation System.
Before applying, it is wise that all youth hunters, and a responsible guardian, read and review the youth hunter information contained on the two documents: “Illinois Youth Pheasant Hunt Information” and “Illinois Youth Pheasant Hunt Regulations”. These can be found on the same website.
There is no offline method of applying. Therefore, if you do not have a computer connected to the internet, and you wish to participate, it is best you check with your friends and family to see if they have access to the internet. Otherwise, you can apply online at your local public library. The process of completing a reservation is short and should only take five minutes.
