Pheasant sightings ample on season's opening day

If Wednesday's opening day is any indication, state Department of Natural Resources wildlife biologists were right about their pheasant forecast this year.

Biologists predicted that hunters would see about the same number of birds as last year, given results in the annual spring pheasant survey. Heavy rains last spring didn't seem to hurt the bird population as much as some feared.

That's pretty much what a party including 14-year-old Andy Fink of Genesee Township saw on the start of pheasant hunting season Wednesday in the Thumb.

Andy was hunting with his grandfather, Tim Hughes of Indian River, as well as Greg Jamison of Plymouth and Bob Ramsey of Lake Orion.

Andy, a freshman at Kearsley High School, killed his first pheasant during the hunt.

"This was more exciting than anything I've done with the exception of the youth deer hunt last month where I killed an 8-point," he said.

In all, the party saw 22 birds, including eight roosters. They killed three roosters. That was slightly less than last year.

Other hunters reported seeing a decent number of birds, Hughes said.
