Dove hunting returns to Basin

MORONGO BASIN - Dove hunting season has returned to the Morongo Basin. The season opened on Wednesday, Sept. 1, and will run through Wednesday, Sept. 15.

Officials at the Morongo Basin sheriff's station, having previously received numerous calls about illegal shooters, have taken the opportunity to remind residents of some basic safety issues.

Most hunters will look for game in washes and will hunt anytime 30 minutes before sunrise and 30 minutes after sunset.

Hunters are reminded that they must have current California hunting licenses, Migratory Upland Game Bird stamps and Harvest Information stamps.

There is a daily bag limit of 10 birds of any species per hunter, with a total of 20 birds in possession during the season.

Only shotguns may be used.

Hunters must remain at least 450 feet from any residence, business, school or dedicated roadway. It is the hunter's responsibility to be aware of their location.

Sheriff's deputies report having incidences of hunters shooting right next to an elementary school.

Hunters also need property owner's permission when hunting on private property.
