Conservation Department Offers Events

To Introduce Newcomers to Outdoor Activities

Want to introduce someone to hunting or fishing, and don’t know where to begin? The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources offers numerous events throughout the year that make it easy to help others learn about the outdoors.

Special youth hunting events allow youngsters under the age of 16 to gain hunting experience while accompanied by a non-hunting, properly-licensed adult at least 25 years old. Note that only on youth dove hunts, the adults are also allowed to hunt.

Youth dove hunts are extremely popular hunting events offered by the Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division. Held at various sites around the state on selected Saturday afternoons during dove season, each hunt begins with a welcome session in which hunting safety precautions are reviewed and emphasized. Both youth and adult may hunt. See the Department’s website www.outdooralabama.com for the 2004 schedule of sites and dates, along with more information on youth dove hunts.

A special statewide youth deer hunting day is scheduled for November 13, the Saturday before the opening of gun season. Both youth and adult must follow hunter orange requirements. Only the youth may hunt.

The Saturday before regular opening days for turkey hunting, special youth turkey hunts will be held on several Wildlife Management Areas.

Hunters can introduce youngsters to waterfowl hunting on the weekend of February 12-13, 2005.

During the spring and summer months, numerous community fishing events provide quality fishing opportunities designed to bring families together to teach youngsters to fish. Other fishing events are also provided for disabled or for senior citizens. The Fishing Section of the Department’s website www.outdooralabama.com maintains a list of upcoming fishing events.

Women have an opportunity to learn about hunting, fishing, and much more at Becoming an Outdoors Woman workshops held on the first weekend of October and March each year. These women-only events provide instruction and hands-on experience during a weekend of fun and camaraderie. Go to the Outdoor Adventures section at www.outdooralabama.com for course descriptions and registration information.
