DNR Approves Budget To Raise Hunting, Fishing License Fees
Proposal Slashes 150 Jobs

POSTED: 5:20 pm EST December 9, 2004

MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Board approved a budget request Wednesday that would raise hunting and fishing license fees.

It also asks the governor for $1.5 million more to fight chronic wasting disease, and it would slash more than 150 positions in the Department of Natural Resources.

The proposal is the product of weeks of negotiations between DNR staff and conservation groups.

The governor will use it in developing his budget proposal for the two-year period starting next July.

Under the plan, resident hunting license fees would rise from $20 to $32, and resident fishing license fees would increase from $17 to $20.

The board also restored the job of whooping crane coordinator. That person plays a key role in the project to reintroduce the endangered birds in eastern North America.

The board also voted to keep staffing levels intact at the MacKenzie Environmental Education Center in Poynette and the Chippewa Moraine Ice Age State Recreation Area. They had been slated for cuts in the DNR's original proposal.
