Mukwonago approves pheasant-hunting club

Posted: June 15, 2005
Town of Mukwonago - A pheasant-hunting preserve that withstood earlier criticism from nearby neighbors was unanimously approved by the Town Board Wednesday after virtually no discussion by the board.

No residents attended the meeting to speak about the proposal.

The preserve will be on the edge of the town, three miles from the southwestern boundary of Waukesha on 519 acres of farmland.

The site is along Highway I, between Highway 83 and Holiday Road.

The club will be a state-licensed, Class A hunting preserve run by Steve Williams, owner of Wern Valley Inc.

According to minutes from an April 6 public hearing regarding a conditional use permit for the hunting club, nearby residents expressed concerns about safety, noise, traffic and trespassing.

Rob Schuett, owner of the farm, said he intended to continue farming and would move his dairy cows to another part of his land.

Williams owns and operates the Wern Valley Sportsmen's Club in the Town of Genesee on Highway D, where 30,000 birds are raised annually for hunters. He also operates the state-owned McMiller Sports Center shooting range in the Southern Unit of Kettle Moraine State Forest near Eagle.
