To create more opportunities for dove hunters, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has created 14 fields in wildlife management areas to attract birds.

The three- to five-acre fields were planted with small grains, sunflowers and other crops that attract doves. To help bring the birds to the fields, DNR wildlife managers have been knocking down some crops, causing the seeds to fall to the ground, which should bring doves to those areas when the season opens Sept. 1.

Duck and goose hunting will be prohibited in the dove fields, which are considered baited under federal waterfowl regulations. Bill Penning, DNR farmland wildlife program coordinator, said the dove fields shouldn't interfere with waterfowl hunting; they are not in areas typically frequented by waterfowl. Signs will be posted in the fields to remind hunters of the regulations.

Most of the fields are in southern Minnesota WMAs as well as the Carlos Avery WMA in Chisago and Anoka counties.
