It's pheasant season for resident hunters - through Monday

Associated Press

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Properly licensed South Dakota hunters can shoot pheasants on public lands through Monday.

More than 1 million acres of public land are open to resident hunters during the special three-day season. The limit is three roosters a day.

Public lands include U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service waterfowl production areas; state Game, Fish and Parks game production and walk-in areas; Corps of Engineers lands along the Missouri River; U.S. Forest Service national grasslands; and U.S. Bureau of Reclamation land.

Last year, almost 21,000 hunters took 44,000 birds during the special season.

It's the fourth year for the resident-only hunting.

Doug Hansen, GF&P wildlife director, said the season has become more popular, especially since the recent rise in pheasant numbers. The season was developed to answer complaints that out-of-state hunters were overcrowding public areas during the regular season.
