PF Promotes McMasters to Western Biologist Post

St. Paul, Minn. – February 9, 2005 – Pheasants Forever (PF) announces the promotion of Gabe McMasters to the position of regional wildlife biologist for the western U.S. McMasters takes over for Walt Bodie who retired after five years in the position. Prior to the promotion, McMasters spent the last year as a PF habitat specialist in Idaho.

McMaster’s primary duties as PF’s western biologist will include starting new chapters and working with the existing 4,000 PF members and 36 PF chapters in California, Idaho, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. He will assist those chapters in raising and expending funds on wildlife habitat projects and conservation education. Gabe will also be working with local, state, and federal natural resource agencies on behalf of those chapters.

“Western pheasant hunters gained a valuable friend today,” reports Rick Young, PF’s vice president of field operations. “Gabe is the brightest young star we have on the PF team. He was recently recognized as the organization’s ‘Rookie of the Year’ acknowledging his tremendous first year with PF as a habitat specialist. Gabe is not just passionate about pheasants; he’s passionate about western pheasants and creating the habitat necessary to reach the potential for pheasants in their U.S. birthplace.” Pheasants were introduced to the U.S. from China in 1882. Owen Denny, U.S. Ambassador to China, first introduced them to Oregon.

“I am thrilled to be PF’s point person west of the Rockies,” explains McMasters. “There is great potential in the west for PF to make an impact for pheasants and other varieties of upland wildlife. The northern Idaho and eastern Washington area, for instance, is a wildlife gem waiting to explode with the right habitat help. I’m here to identify those gems and mobilize the help necessary to reach their potential.” PF is the only national wildlife conservation organization that leaves 100 percent of the fundraising dollars, along with the decision on how best to utilize those funds, in the local communities where they are raised.

McMasters is a Pocatello, Idaho native. He graduated with a B.S. in natural resources ecology from the University of Idaho, Moscow. Prior to joining PF, Gabe was a biologist with the Idaho Fish & Game Department’s Clearwater Pheasant Initiative. In that role, he worked on projects enhancing Conservation Reserve Program lands. To learn more about PF, or to start a chapter in your area, contact Gabe at gmcmasters@pheasantsforever.org.

PF is a non-profit conservation organization dedicated to the protection and enhancement of pheasant and other wildlife populations in North America through habitat improvement, land management, public awareness, and education. Such efforts benefit landowners and wildlife alike. PF has more than 110,000 members in over 600 local chapters across the continent.
