For the first time, the nation's biggest event for pheasant and quail hunters and bird dog enthusiasts is coming to Kansas City. Pheasants Forever's National Pheasant Fest & Quail Classic will be held Feb. 17-19, 2012, at the Kansas City Convention Center in downtown Kansas City, Mo. Kansas Sam Governor Brownback hosted the inaugural Kansas Governor’s Ringneck Classic on Nov. 18-20 in Oakley. Approximately 68 hunters joined the Governor for the hunt. The weekend began with a community dinner on Friday night, then hunting and an awards dinner on Saturday, followed by a bonus hunt on Sunday.

The 2010 Kansas youth pheasant and quail season runs Nov. 6-7, and many adult hunters are set to use this time not only to pass the hunting tradition on but to stretch their legs, scout fields, and work dogs. During these two days, youth 16 and younger may hunt under the supervision of an adult 18 or older, but the adult may not hunt.

With Kansas annually ranking in the top three states in the nation for pheasant hunting, hunters often ask why this popular game bird cannot be found in southeast Kansas. Like all wildlife, pheasants need four things to survive: food, water, cover, and space. If these things are not present in the proper mix for an individual species, it will not thrive. SANDHILL CRANE SEASON OPENS NOV. 11, RUNS THROUGH JAN. 7
PRATT — The sandhill crane hunting season opens Nov. 11 and runs through Jan. 7, 2010. Hunters pursuing this large game bird should be aware that the endangered whooping crane may be present during the sandhill crane season. Whooping cranes use the same habitats as sandhill cranes, and Quivira National Wildlife Refuge and Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area are two of their favorite stops in the Central Flyway.

KANSAS UPLAND BIRD, WATERFOWL SEASONS ON TAP
PRATT — The Kansas pheasant and quail seasons return to their traditional opening and closing dates this fall. Both seasons open on Saturday, Nov. 14, and run through Jan. 31, 2010. Prairie chicken season opens a week later — Nov. 21 through Jan. 31, 2010, in the Northwest and East units. In the Southwest Unit, prairie chicken season runs Nov. 21-Dec. 31. (The prairie chicken Southwest Unit is bordered by Highway K-96 on the north and U.S. 281 on the east.)

FREE TRAP SHOOT AT GLEN ELDER NOV. 7
GLEN ELDER — On Saturday, Nov. 7, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks will conduct an event designed to lure more youth and novice hunters into the field. The Glen Elder Youth Shooting Challenge will begin at 1 p.m. and run through 4:30 p.m. at the Glen Elder Wildlife Area Office, just south of the US. Highway 24 and Kansas Highway 128 junction, approximately 1 mile west of Glen Elder.

QUAIL FOREVER CHAPTER TO CONDUCT YOUTH HUNT
STERLING — On Nov. 7, the Heartland Pioneer Chapter of Quail Forever will sponsor a youth hunt at Dr. Jack Mull’s wildlife preserve, approximately 12 miles east of Sterling. Experienced instructors and bird dogs will safely guide young hunters on a pheasant and quail hunt. The event will reinforce hunter education concepts, and participants will learn how to hunt in a line and behind trained bird dogs.

YOUTH LONG TAIL FEATHER CONTESTS HIGHLIGHT NOV. 7-8 YOUTH PHEASANT SEASON
NORTON — The Longspur Chapter of Pheasants Forever (PF) in Norton challenges all area youth 16 and younger to enter the long tail feather contest following the 2009 youth pheasant and quail season, Nov. 7-8. Participants are asked to pluck the longest tail feather on the birds they bag and bring them to End Zone Sports and Office Supplies in Norton to enter the contest. Resident entrants have a chance to win a Kansas Lifetime Hunting license..
