A new chapter of Quail Forever has been added in Texas’ South Plains region, through the hard work of local quail hunters and conservationists. The new chapter is to be officially known as the Llano Estacado Chapter of Quail Forever. Their main goal is to improve the local habitat and educate groups about conservation as a way to create an environment for sustainable populations of quail, scaled quail and other wildlife in Texas.

With the pheasant hunting season over, thoughts of pheasant hunters, conservationists and landowners will shift. Now the focus until the next season will be how to preserve the populations of the popular game bird. To that end, there are a couple of conservation banquets to raise awareness and funds for the need to improve habitat.

If you are someone who loves to take a trip down to Texas for a little Turkey hunting, your plans might be spoilt. Turkey populations in East Texas are struggling. This has led to calls for there to be a cancellation of the Turkey hunting season in more than half of Texas.

Hunting for quail in Texas has been difficult in recent years. The population of the birds has dropped significantly since the ‘60s and ‘70s. An entire generation of quail hunters that grew up hunting the birds every year have all but disappeared and have been unable to pass on the tradition to their children and grandchildren.

The last 20 to 30 years have been pretty sad for Texas quail hunters.

The quail populations have dropped as much as 70% in that time and it’s one of the reasons that the storied traditions of quail hunting has dropped as well.

The heat has been taking its toll on the landscape and the wildlife. Temperatures have been breaking old records and the drought has been coming down hard all over. For the quail and other upland birds in Texas this means that it would be a rough season.
