Habitat loss is the often the main culprit when it comes to why pheasants in South Dakota and other states across the nation have been declining. As farmers are not signing back up to the CRP program and instead turning to productive cops and as land is used for development; the long grasses used by pheasants for foraging, shelter and nesting is disappearing.

Nearly three million commercial turkeys have been wiped out by avian influenza recently. However, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources are hoping that the wild turkey population should be able to avoid the epidemic that disrupted many Midwest operations. As commercial operations are struggling to control the outbreak, Iowa state agencies are asking turkey hunters to be on the lookout for wild turkeys that could be affected. Should hunters find a bird they suspect of having avian influenza, the hunter should report the bird and its whereabouts to state officials.

Recently the South Dakota wild turkey hunting season began for those looking to practice their archery skills. During the early phase of the hunting season only a bow and arrow can be used to hunt the ground bird. The firearm hunting begins on April 11 and runs through to May 17. There are still opportunities for hunters to claim their prairie license. They are handed out on a first come, first served basis. However, residents can claim two licenses while non-residents are limited to one.

It was a very special event at the annual Bear Crop Science and Graves Gin Cooperation pheasant hunt on March 17. This year’s host, Liberty Hills Outfitters have been holding pheasant hunts for nearly four years. Mostly they cater for corporate groups and small parties. Hunts are usually limited to about 200 birds.

On July 20, 2015 the South Dakota Community Foundation board of directors will have to present a report detailing how the organization used $350,000. Legislature approved the funds and expected them to be used for wildlife habitat improvement.

Pheasants Forever has helped to improve the habitat for pheasants and other upland wildlife across South Dakota. The conservation efforts have improved more than 43,000 acres across 1,319 wildlife habitat projects. This has included projects that have been initiated by the state’s 34 chapters and more than 23,314 acres of habitat supported by the Pheasant Forever’s Farm Bill biologist program.

The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Commission is looking to get more clarification and a proposed change to the laws regarding hunting groups. According to current legislation, no more than twenty people are allowed to hunt in one group. This rule does not count against those hunting jackrabbits or predators. However the rule also does not distinguish between hunter and observer. According to current guidelines, anyone who is within the group is counted on the list.

The newly appointed South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Secretary Kelly Hepler has admitted that he is still learning the ropes. On a recent trip from Aberdeen to Siox Falls, Hepler saw his first case of habitat loss in the field. “I saw a lot of old farmsteads and their shelterbelts that had been torn up or burned up and turned into beans or corn,” Hepler said. “I had heard about that but I hadn’t seen it before.”

It hasn’t been long since the new Pheasants Forever regional office opened in Brookings, South Dakota and it’s team have already started to work in earnest for the bird’s protection. Recently, it has announced its intentions to redefine conservation efforts in the pheasant hunting capital.

The Pheasants Forever Chapter in Mitchell, South Dakota will host its annual landowner habitat event this February. This will be the thirtieth year of the event and this year, it will be held at the Moose Lodge in Mitchell. The educational event includes a buffet of roast beef and chicken, prizes donated by local businesses, a raffle and a silent auction. The biggest prize on offer will be the national Pheasants Forever 2015 Ford pickup truck.

In 2014, it was announced that Pheasants Forever was to open a regional headquarters in South Dakota. This was to help stem the tide of a decreasing pheasant population that dropped by nearly 80% between 2012 and 2013.

Farmers can generate an additional income from hosting pheasant hunts on their land. Some farmers have even taken the unusual step to call themselves pheasant farmers. This isn’t to say that they have abandoned common crops and farm animals. In fact, many still earn the majority of their income from these staple business avenues. However, farmers do know that hunters need land and pheasants to hunt. Farmers have both of these.

South Dakotan outdoorsman, Tony Dean is still providing to young hunters even after he died seven years ago. The outdoorsman co-produced numerous award winning radio and television programs. After his death, those closest to him compiled a couple of programs to ensure his legacy would not be forgotten. One of these programs was the Tony Dean’s Acres. This is a program where land is bought within the state for wildlife management, conservation and to allow public hunting.
