The sexes tend to separate during the winter, but in early spring the roosters begin to feel the sex urge. Mature birds select a territory and begin crowing. This attracts females, or at least lets them know something is going on and notifies other cockbirds that this area has been claimed. A battle will result if another roster moves into the area.
