Hunters Saftey

A Hunters Safety Certificate is required in Colorado for anyone born after January 1, 1949

Of all the upland game birds found in the great state of Colorado, the two that provide the most excitement for upland bird hunters are pheasants and quail. 2005 was a banner year for both upland gamebirdh unting in Colorado, especially pheasant hunting.

Most of the wild population pheasant hunting in Colorado takes place on the eastern plains, but there are pockets of birds to be found on the West slope of Colorado. The 2006 season is not expected to be as good as last year, primarly because of a very dry spring in much of the state. Late rains helped the pheasant and quail populations come back in some areas, so upland hunters can expect to see some young pheasants that will probably be smaller and not completely colored up. Late rain storms also helped with quail population numbers, especially in southeast Colorado.

Overall, wildlife biologists are expecting a great pheasant hunting season. There are a ton of great places to hunt upland birds in Colorado but it will be up to the hunters to find them.

As in the past Colorado has a great program that allows access to hunters. This program is known as “walk in” areas. These are places where the Colorado Division of Wildlife has made agreements with and paid landowners to allow public upland hunting. Hunters 16 and older have to have a twenty dollar permit to access these properties. For more information on the walk-in access program, including maps and what’s new this year, see the Colorado Division of Wildlife website..

The Wild pheasant and quail hunting seasons both start on November 11 in Colorado and the end on January 21 East of I-25 and on January 7 West of I-25. However, the quail seasons ends on January 7th in Northeast Colorado. Many of the Colorado Pheasant hunting preserves listed above have extended seasons that are much longer than the traditional seaons. Please contact each club individually for season dates. Happy Hunting!
