Oscar and Juan’s First Hunt Over New Dogs
After all of the planning and training, September 4 finally arrive. Juan showed up from Tri Cities with Oscar and Oscar’s nephew, Alex. It was Juan’s first hunt with a new dog and new gun, and Oscar was going to hunt over his new dog, too, so the weekend was going to be filled with new experiences.

We hunted the first evening, and the young dogs played most of the time, but did well. We decided to hunt them apart the next day, so I took Chili’s (Juan’s dog) mom and dad with us and my son took his new GSP pup, Salsa, to hunt with Oscar and Solo (Oscar’s dog). We were hunting Blue Grouse that morning, and Chili was soon hunting with his mom and dad and doing good, but we just didn’t find any birds. On the other side of the ridge, My son David, Oscar, and Alex were banging away but the birds wouldn’t hold. After enough shots, Oscar had a blue Grouse. The morning was warming up, so we headed home for lunch.
In the evening, we left the young dogs at home and we took my trusty GSP Willy, and my son took his GSP Whiskey. That evening, we had 16 points and 12 backs and ended up with four Ruffed Grouse in the bag.
The next morning came early, and Juan, Oscar, and Alex were heading for home at 2:00 that afternoon. So we headed to a good creek bottom and I stayed at the truck with my youngest son Big Dan and listed to the shots. On the second hunt that morning, Juan bagged his first bird with his new gun and new dog.
Such is life, all things have to come to an end and my company had to head back, but not empty handed. Now we are planning a quail hunt so that they can come back and hunt some more.
