Ring-necked Pheasants are widely distributed, although they are more common east of the Continental Divide. Their range in western Montana is limited largely to the irrigated Flathead and Bitterroot valleys. Habitat consists of open grassland and cropland areas with brushy cover, especially along watercourses. Good habitat is provided by grain crops and weeds for food, with weeds, brush and trees for cover. Extensive grasslands or forests do not provide good habitat. In winter they are found mainly in cattails within 500 feet of a grain field.
