Here is a great story from out in California.

A few weeks ago in Sutter County there were 300 pheasants released for the annual youth pheasant hunt. This next weekend more will be released as fathers and sons head back out to the field in pursuit of the greatest upland bird in the US.

There are many interesting aspects of the youth hunt, but what is really interesting about this story is that some of the fathers now taking their sons out for the hunt actually went on the same hunt with their fathers some 20 or 30 years ago.

That is a great perspective on how hunting becomes a generational rite of passage for both sons and daughters. As we grow up we all look to spend time with our parents and grandparents. Hunting has long been one of the most enjoyed traditions for families.

Out in Sutter County it looks like there were some successes in the field, but we all know that the hunt is about more than just the harvesting of the birds.

Youth hunts and really just taking the kids hunting are great for teaching. Kids learn how to respect the land, the animals and the firearms they’re using. When kids respect each of those items they understand that nothing can be taken for granted and that safety for oneself and for others is most important.

Those are lessons that many learn while hunting with their parents. Hunting is a great tool for learning and developing kids, but also for forming bonds that can last a lifetime. Hunting is something that generations of family can enjoy for entire lifetimes and as is the case out in Sutter County it can go on and on as sons have their own sons down the road.

Are you taking your kids out hunting this year?
