Leave it to the kids to keep the spirits up during the recent opening of the Kansas pheasant hunting season.

Previously we mentioned that the hunting has been hard in the state for the opening weekend of pheasant season. The dry conditions have carried over from the drought in the summer and it has made for the worst conditions for pheasant hunting in recent memory.

On top of the dry conditions was the weather. Things touched in the 80s at times a few days before the opening of the season, but cooled down some. The warm conditions mixed with high winds made it nearly impossible for hunters to find success. Many called it quits early giving up all hope, but there were some groups that weathered the difficult hand and made it out to the field the entire day.

One group including two relatively new hunters and it was one of those kids that harvested the last cock pheasant of the day. It’s great to see the kids out there enjoying the hunting with their family and friends. Sometimes it’s the kids that remind you what hunting is all about. The pheasant numbers may be at the worst in the memory, but the memories being made are ones that can’t be replaced.

When we all think back to the best times we’ve had hunting we often remember the hunt and not the birds. Well, sure we remember the way a bird flushed out, but we remember the hunt. We think about the people we were with at the time and we’re usually tell those people the story even when they were the ones there sharing in the experience.

It’s great to see the tradition being passed on to such enthusiastic young hunters. That’s what hunting is really all about so it looks like the Kansas pheasant hunt has been a success after all.
