Many of us would just like to be alive at 97 years old. For one many in Colorado it’s not enough to be alive at such a late age. For Harold Nelson it means he needs to be out in the field pheasant hunting in the Holyoke area.

Harold hasn’t missed an opening weekend of pheasant hunting in 66 years save for one season when he had to make it the second weekend. It’s an incredible accomplishment to do something for that long. That’s a few lifetimes for some of us and Harold looks back on all those years with joy because of all the good times he’s had out in the field with friends and family.

It’s worth it to read the entire story. Really it’s told from the point of view of Harold. He looks back on those years pheasant hunting and shares some of the stories.

It seems from memory that there were more pheasants in the state back then. He’s talking about the ‘40s and ‘50s when he thinks back to the time when there were about 20 guys that would go hunting each year. They would stay in their pickups at night or a few of them would get rooms in the motel if they could afford it.

It’s really interesting to read Harold’s story and see how some aspects of hunting change while some do not. Back then you could go shining in the fields and firing off at jack rabbits. While that may be frowned upon today there are still plenty of similarities after all these years.

Today, Harold goes out with family members and a few friends. He is happy to pass the tradition on to his grandkids and the others in the crew. Hopefully they will be able to make to nearly 100 years old and find the strength to get out in the field to still hunt after all those years.

It’s a great inspiration.
