It sounds like the  the 2012-13 pheasant season in the Kansas area have been slim pickings. One story out of the Kansas-Nebraska area reports that there were just a few pheasants.

The story of just a few birds is something that’s been the case across the country this year. Kansas was right in the middle of the drought this summer. There was also difficult nesting conditions earlier in the spring when the heavy rain flooded many of the fields.

It’s all led to one of the most disappointing seasons in recent memory.

There are some good stories, though. You’ll find that farmers that leave a few good crop fields for the birds have found some good draws for pheasant. These fields will hold the birds and when you get into December those birds generally stay where the cover is. If you can find a good place you’ll have a rush of action once you hit the field.

In the story linked above the hunter looked to his hunting partner, a new dog, to make things interesting. The dog did a good job on its first time out in the field. It was able to flush up a bird. It was the only one they were able to get that day, but it still made for a great hunt.

While there have been many stories of difficult hunting this season there are still good memories to be had. You can head out with your family and friends and find a few birds, but more than that you’ll still find good laughter and a good hunt.

Plus we all need those low moments to make us appreciate the good moments out in the field. Next year the stars could align and we’ll be extra thankful because we’ll remember that things have been difficult in the past.
