There are a few different ways wildlife organizations assist with the pheasant population.

One of the methods has taken center stage in Western South Dakota.

The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks organization has been busy this spring. The organization has teams out in the state collecting wild pheasants from public areas where the population has high numbers. They are capturing the healthy birds and transporting them to areas where the populations are not as strong.

For South Dakota pheasant hunters in the Western part of the state this is great news.

The program is another effort to increase the already high participation rate of pheasant hunting in South Dakota. The state is recognized as the best pheasant hunting location in the world. Hunters come annually from all over to hunt pheasants.

But hunting in the Western part of the state has not been as strong as it has been in other areas. Those coming to the Western counties have been disappointed.

The program aims to turn that trend around while making the entire state a destination for top South Dakota pheasant hunting.

But simply capturing pheasants and relocating them is not enough. The teams have been busy for a few years improving pheasant habitat in the West.

Natural grassland has been introduced and will continue to be monitored in the area to ensure that when the pheasants are released they have a high chance of survival.

The state has had programs of releasing birds in the past, but this new method captures wild birds, which have a higher survival rate.

The department feels the program is already showing signs of success. There are plans to continue the program in the coming years while adding to the habitat.

New food plots and cover areas are being cultivated to give the birds the best chance of succeeding.

As the program continues, those throughout the state will benefit. The reputation of South Dakota has the premiere destination for pheasant hunting should only grow stronger as this program continues.
