There has been a lot of talk over the last 10-20 years about youth and hunting.

As technology has improved there have been more things for young people to do with their time.

Video games, television entertainment and online activities have seen kids focus on other things rather than hunting and the outdoors.

It’s a stark change for those that came from one and two generations ago when the only entertainment was spending time outdoors. You could grab a fishing pole and head to the lake with a few buddies. You could grab the rifle and go chase rabbits and squirrels.

It’s a different story today and for the last few decades hunting groups have been making a strong effort to introduce more young people to the outdoors.

It seems the efforts may be helping especially in North Dakota and surrounding areas.

The Mule Deer Foundation recently held an event promoting mule deer hunting and young people. The effort is the latest in a long line of examples of how hunting groups and organizations are doing everything they can to get kids interested in the outdoors and in hunting once again.

It’s great news that there seems to be some gaining interest in hunting among kids. Even if the fall in interest is flattening out it’s a good sign.

Hunting has been part of the country’s heritage for centuries. It’s important to keep the tradition with us today and for future generations.

And it’s good to see hunting groups with interest in different game coming together to encourage hunting. The more general interest there is in hunting the better. An obvious way to grow each specific hunting sport is to cross promote the industries.

Getting a deer hunter involved in pheasant hunting is a good move for all involved especially the hunters. They’ll get exposure to even more enjoyment in the outdoors.
