This year has not been good for pheasant numbers.

States and counties all over the Midwest and West have seen counts down.

The latest news comes out of Kansas where spring counts are down to lows that haven’t been seen in years. It’s another sad story if you’re looking for good pheasant hunting in the area for the upcoming pheasant hunting season.

The 2010-2011 season was one of the best for Kansas pheasant hunting. It was the highest hunting counts in over two decades. Last year was back down to one of the worst seasons on record and this year looks to be even worse.

Last year during the summer and into the fall there were extreme temperatures and droughts throughout Kansas and much of the country. It made it difficult on all wildlife including pheasants. Many adult birds perished and so did the young birds and chicks.

That’s one of the reasons for the drop in numbers, but this spring has also been one of the coldest and wettest on record. That has made it difficult for this year’s new crop of birds to survive. The nesting season in many areas has been late so birds could have a difficult time surviving into the fall hunting season and into the coming years.

Later this summer and into the fall there will be more official counts of the current birds so things could turn around in Kansas. It’s just one of those things in nature where the patterns always change. Some years are great and other years are way down from previous seasons.

It looks like 2013 and the following years might be down years, but the pheasants should come back. There are some conservation programs happening once again that should improve the habitat and if Mother Nature comes around again the birds will be back.

Hopefully you find success this season if you’re pheasant hunting in Kansas. It should still be enjoyable out there in the field.
