August is a reminder for many things.

It’s the last month of summer. The kids go back to school. Adults try to squeeze in a few last weekend getaways on the lake.

August also marks the return of football season. After the longest off season in professional sports it’s always great to see the teams get back on the field for preseason action.

And finally, August is a reminder that hunting season is right around the corner.

For bird hunters, August is a reminder to get the gear ready for upcoming hunts. It’s a time to make sure you have your paperwork ready to go, the guns cleaned and sighted in and the trips planned for those annual hunting adventures.

It’s also the time of year when bird hunters get their best hunting buddies - their dogs - ready for the upcoming season.

Experts say it takes about 4-6 weeks to get your bird dog back in top form before the pheasant, grouse and quail seasons start opening in September and October. The dogs will have their natural instinct left from the previous season and if you’ve been working with them for a few years you know that they retain some of their ability.

But it’s always a good idea to get your dog back into hunting shape. Working on endurance and precision out in the field in August can lead to fewer headaches and mistakes when it matters most.

By getting your dog in shape you’ll be able to go on those long hunts. It’s never easy for anyone including the dogs to walk fields all day looking for birds. Now is a great opportunity for you to spend time with them in the field getting both you and them back in shape for hunting season.

August marks the end of one season and the beginning of another. It’s the perfect opportunity to get yourself and your best hunting buddies back in shape for the upcoming season.
