It’s always great to read stories about communities investing in natural habitat.

The latest story comes out of Ohio where the state is trying to increase interest in pheasant hunting. The state has a new program out that will help certain areas create natural pheasant habitat with hopes of increasing interest in the bird throughout the state in the future.

Ohio has been one of the most well-known hunting states in the US for years. Deer, turkeys and other wildlife have long called the state home, but it has not been known for great pheasant hunting.

It looks like that perception could change in the coming years.

Upland bird hunting is a timeless tradition throughout the US, but in recent years the natural grassland that pheasants and other birds need to thrive has come under pressure. Landowners have been forced to use land for other activities because the demand for crops like corn and soybeans has been so high.

While some landowners have been doing what they could to maintain the natural habitat, the pressure has been too great for most to overcome.

Now it looks like landowners will get a real incentive to preserve their land in the best interest of wildlife like pheasants, grouse, quail and other birds.

Nearly 18,000 acres are still available in the program throughout the region in the state considered the core area for pheasants.

We’re starting to see more of these programs throughout the US. States in the Midwest like Ohio have seen a huge pressure from the farming community in the last decade. It’s great to read any story that covers efforts to get land back to the type of habitat wildlife need to thrive.

Hopefully the efforts are a success in Ohio and in other states where similar programs are being implemented.
