A South Dakota hunting lodge which was destroyed in a fire last year is being rebuilt with the hopes for it to be ready in time for the hunting season.

The hunting lodge situated in rural Armour was built in 1980, on a preserve which had been cultivated to attract more wildlife to the area. The cause of the fire has never been determined and the owner, James Monfore, says he is still devastated by the loss.

Originally it was thought that a fireplace left burning by a hunting group may have been the cause of the fire. However the State Fire Marshal’s Office advised it was unlikely as the fireplace and chimneys were in good repair.

In its place, a new two story 4,800 square-foot lodge will be built. The cost for the lodge will be $50,000 and it is to be modeled on the old design, although the owner has stated that the memories will never be replaced. Part of the cost has been covered by the insurance.

The new lodge will have a bar and lounge as well as a dining area and kitchen.

The future for the preserve looks good, with hunts booked for the next fall’s hunting season. The area’s manager believes it could be a very busy summer.

The rebuilding of the lodge has certainly placed strain on the preserve’s workers. They had a number of projects already to complete, but with the rebuilding they’ve had more work than they expected.

But with some luck and good weather, the projects should be completed in time and a good hunting season will be enjoyed by many.

Do you have plans to go to the new hunting lodge when it opens? Do you have any memories of the old lodge?
